Villa Unión es la ciudad cabecera del Departamento General Felipe Varela, ubicado al Oeste de la provincia de La Rioja, Argentina, en el valle del río Bermejo.

Rodeado bajo la vista de la Cordillera de los Andes y de el Cordón del Famatina, la ciudad antiguamente llamada «Los Hornillos», ofrece en la actualidad los servicios turísticos más importantes de la Provincia de La Rioja.

Polo comercial del departamento, se puede hacer de esta hermosa ciudad de Villa Unión, la base de partida a innumerables destinos de incalculable magnitud, sensibilidad y belleza.  La calidez de su gente, su cultura, su gastronomía de origen o su música y arte le aseguran un paso por nuestras tierras que dejarán una huella en su corazón.

En lo que ahora es Villa Unión, existió un antiguo pueblo indígena, de la nación pazioca. En la actualidad la mayoría de su población es mestiza siendo la restante población de origen europeo.

El 9 de septiembre de 1881 se sanciona un decreto provincial que establece que el Departamento Guandacol pasaba a Departamento General Lavalle (actualmente Departamento General Felipe Varela) y que su cabecera sería Villa Unión.
